For the fourth consecutive year, SAHF has shipped and delivered a donation of 440 wheelchairs to people with special disabilities. Many of which have never owned one.
Each month we receive an average of 50 requests for wheelchairs in El Salvador, as well as for other orthopedic accessories. These requests are made directly through our in-country organization, FUSAL, or by means of municipal offices, homes for the elderly, community development associations and other NGO's.
The donation delivered on this occasion values at $19,171.70 and is made possible by means of Free Wheelchair Mission’s relentless support. A non-profit organization dedicated to providing mobility to people with special needs that reside in developing countries.
It is estimated that in the world 100 million people are in need of a wheelchair. Free Wheelchair Mission, based in California, began operations in 2001. Since then, they have donated more than 648,000 wheelchairs in more than 85 countries around the world. With a very practical design, the wheelchairs are made up of plastic chairs for seating with attached cushioning to facilitate cleaning and repairs. In addition, each chair comes with a manual pump for tire inflation and basic tools for maintenance.
About 80% of donation recipients live in developing countries where they do not have the economic potential to acquire them. This is why Free Wheelchair Mission has a set goal to manufacture and donate 1 million wheelchairs by 2015 and in this way give back mobility to the millions of people with special needs around the world.
