letter from president

In September of 2023, SAHF will have served El Salvador and its people for 40 years. As the President of the board for 25 of those years, I am proud of all we have been able to accomplish. Over the years we have been able to help thousands of people overcome malnutrition, overcome mobility issues, support them with food insecurity, give them access to life changing medicines, giving people love, hope and so much more.

SAHF has been a critical piece of the puzzle. As SAHF continues to grow not only with it’s reach in Salvadoran communities, helping communities in every state of the country. But also growing in the number of containers shipped and the quality of the items being sent to the people who are in need of our help.

As we move forward and not only celebrate our 40 years of success but also plan for the next 40 years. We hope that you will continue to be part of SAHF’s growing family. In 2022 SAHF sent over 20 million in value of in-kind goods despite the rising cost of transporting containers to El Salvador. We are grateful to our family of supporters and donors over the last few years, we are very aware the rising costs are affecting all. But we know that your generosity does more than help just one person, it helps bring hope to people in need.

Our focus this coming year continues to be helping children and families overcome malnutrition and food insecurity. As the cost of food continues to rise all over the world but an astounding 14% in El Salvador, we aim to help people who most need our support to put food on their family’s tables and work to make a better life for themselves and their families.

Thank you for being a part of SAHF’s Family and we thank you for your continued support over the next 40 years.

WeNOURISH

In 2004, an extensive nutrition-based program — Libras de Amor, was designed to address malnutrition in children under five years old who live in El Salvador's rural areas. Currently this program is known as the Early Childhood Development Program.

With the help of FUSAL and in-kind donors, the early childhood development program helps support children during their most critical stages of development over the first 5 years of life. The program is also growing support families and help them overcome the dangers of malnutrition and the issues that arise as food sees inflation of over 14%.

Impact story - Estrella

Estrella Belén Melgar Morataya was born July 15th, 2022. She was born weighing 3.1kg or 6.8 lbs., a healthy weight for a little girl. Nine days after her birth, the Early Childhood Development Program technical team identified an alarming weight loss, as she went from 3.1 kg/ 6.8 lbs to 2.7 kg/5.9 lbs. If this situation continued, Estrella's health would have been severely compromised in less than a month. Thankfully our team was there to help!

WeEMPOWER

SAHF initiated a pilot program to teach English to kindergarten and elementary school children at Residencial Libertad's educational complex. The program's methodology provides short-term results and effectively teaches students how to acquire the language gradually and use it in their daily lives.
Students participating in the program receive five hours a week of language instruction to speak, read and write in English. This gives them the opportunity to continue bettering themselves. If students master the English language they are given the opportunity to work, in call centers where they can make a healthy living and break the poverty cycle in their family.
Since 2017, SAHF has sponsored the English Language program for approximately 1,200 students at Residencial Libertad's educational complex.

1,200 students

The program now also provides a component know as Plan de Vida (Life Plan) for high school students which
enables them to forge a visual path for their future, and aligns with SAHF's human development mission by believing that learning English can pave the way for more significant opportunities.
