José Eduardo

Dear Esteemed Contributors,

As we reflect on another year of unwavering commitment to our mission, I am grateful for each one of you who has supported our cause.

Over the past four decades, our foundation has achieved remarkable milestones that have positively impacted countless lives in El Salvador. Through the relentless efforts of our team and the generosity of our supporters, we have been able to provide close to one billion dollars’ worth of vital resources, including medicines, medical supplies, food, educational materials, and nutritional supplements, all distributed free of charge by our in-country sister organization, FUSAL. These essential items have reached over 500 agencies, spanning hospitals, clinics, communities, schools, and orphanages throughout the region, touching the lives of those most in need.  These essential items have also reached over 159,000 direct beneficiaries, who benefit from FUSAL’s locally implemented programs.

In 2023 alone, our foundation shipped more than $43 million worth of in-kind goods, further exemplifying our commitment to making a meaningful difference in the lives of others. Additionally, our partnership with our esteemed counterparts in the USA has enabled us to enhance programs addressing rare diseases such as hemophilia and cystic fibrosis, ensuring that individuals facing these challenges receive the support and care they deserve.

One of our proudest achievements is the bilingual program at Residencial Libertad, where over 1,000 children from kindergarten to high school receive English as a second language. This initiative has opened the door of opportunity for these young individuals, empowering them to reach their full potential and pursue their dreams.

Furthermore, I am thrilled to share that in 2023, SAHF shipped more than 4.4 million nutritionally developed meals for distribution to over 7,000 children in 22 rural communities of El Salvador. This vital initiative addresses the critical need for proper nutrition among vulnerable populations, ensuring that children have access to the nourishment they need to thrive.

Additionally, after a hiatus of three years, we were thrilled to host our 40th-anniversary gala, where we had the privilege of reconnecting with familiar faces and sharing the good news of our collective efforts. It was truly heartwarming to witness the continued support and enthusiasm from our donor community, reaffirming our shared commitment to our mission.

Despite the numerous challenges we have faced, I am filled with optimism as I look towards the future of our foundation. The unwavering dedication and passion demonstrated by each member of our community serve as a beacon of hope, inspiring us to continue our efforts with renewed vigor and determination. Together, we stand poised to embark on the next chapter of our journey, confident in our ability to create positive change and transform lives for generations to come.

As we celebrate our accomplishments and look ahead to the next 40 years and beyond, I extend my deepest gratitude to each of you for your invaluable contributions, unwavering support, and steadfast commitment to our shared vision. Together, we will continue to make a difference in the world and leave a legacy of compassion, kindness, and hope.

With heartfelt appreciation and warm regards,

Signature Javier

OUR PROGRAMS

WeSUPPORT (Humanitarian Aid)

The WeSUPPORT Program is an in-kind initiative of the Salvadoran American Humanitarian Foundation (SAHF), supported by dedicated in-kind partners in the United States. This collaboration enables SAHF to extend its reach and impact to thousands of individuals in El Salvador.

In-Kind donations collected by SAHF in the United States fund a vast network that includes hospitals, clinics, rural health posts, orphanages, nursing homes, libraries, nonprofit organizations, and rural health promoters. The program's work is carried out through the design and development of projects, as well as the distribution of donations under three pillars of action:

SAHF's outreach spans all 14 states of El Salvador, serving people of all races, genders, religions, ages, disabilities, economic statuses, and political affiliations.

Since its founding in 1983, SAHF has shipped nearly a billion dollars’ worth of urgently needed relief items, distributed free of charge by its sister organization, FUSAL. These items reach a historic network of 630 beneficiaries, including hospitals, public health establishments, social and municipal clinics, non-profit health organizations, care centers for the elderly and children, schools, aid and rescue institutions, community organizations, and vulnerable communities served by FUSAL's other social programs.

WeNOURISH
(Nutrition and Early Childhood Development)

The Early Childhood Program aims to contribute to the proper development of children aged zero to four in households experiencing multidimensional poverty in rural areas of El Salvador, with a focus on nutrition and early stimulation.

Since its inception, we've achieved remarkable reductions in malnutrition rates. Our efforts have reached over 18 communities, historically benefiting more than 200,000 individuals across El Salvador.

In 2023 SAHF shipped 17 containers of fortified rice donated by our in-kind partner Feed My Starving Children.  Part of this donation was used in food preparation workshops aim to promote healthy eating practices among the program's participant families by using local resources and focusing on the creative introduction of foods for children. These workshops model recipes that focus on preventing and treating malnutrition and anemia.

ACHIEVEMENTS

-450 families participated in 68 food preparation workshops conducted during the year. A total of 1,000 recipe booklets were distributed to the families, featuring nutritious preparations based on the fortified food MannaPack - rice with textured soy protein - providing healthy and delicious options for families to apply what they learned at home.

-The food distributed to families and other supplies for food preparation were valued at $152,808.

WeEMPOWER STORY

Fernando, From Residencial Libertad.

Residencial Libertad, located in a marginalized area outside of San Salvador, is home to many families living in precarious conditions. Despite the challenges, hope has emerged through an innovative bilingual program designed to improve educational and job opportunities. This program not only teaches English but also empowers participants to dream of a better future.

Known for high poverty and lack of resources, families in Residencial Libertad face daily difficulties such as limited access to basic services, poor education, and scarce job opportunities. Children and young people often grow up amidst violence and insecurity, limiting their prospects for a promising future.

In response, SAHF launched a bilingual program in Residencial Libertad. The goal: provide residents, especially the youth, with a powerful tool to overcome their circumstances. The program offers free English classes, study materials, and interactive activities. Dedicated teachers and volunteers create a supportive and motivating learning environment.

The program has significantly impacted the community. Participants show greater interest in education and improved language skills. Innovative teaching methods, like educational games and conversation sessions, have increased student confidence and aspirations. Parents have noted positive changes in their children.

Fernando, a 17-year-old from Residencial Libertad, has always been interested in computer science and dreams of attending university. However, his precarious environment made this dream seem impossible. Discovering the bilingual program, Fernando saw learning English as vital for his future in computer science. He was impressed by the quality of the classes and the dedication of the teachers.

Fernando enjoys the dynamic English classes, which incorporate technology through educational apps and online resources. This not only improves his language skills but also supports his passion for computer science. The program has greatly enhanced his English fluency, enabling him to access numerous online educational resources.

Fernando's success inspires other young people in Residencial Libertad to stay committed to the program and pursue a better future. The community has seen increased interest in education and decreased dropout rates due to the program's innovative and motivating approach.

The bilingual program in Residencial Libertad has been transformative for many like Fernando. By providing access to education and empowering residents, it is changing lives and planting seeds for a brighter future. Fernando's story exemplifies the positive impact education can have in vulnerable contexts, showing that with the right opportunities, anyone can overcome their circumstances and achieve their dreams.

WeAID (Emergency Relief)

In response to natural or human-made disasters, SAHF mobilizes its resources to provide support and increase the collection of in-kind donations across the United States to send to El Salvador. We also activate specific funds to enhance monetary donations.

Contributions to the WeAID fund enable immediate local purchases for those in need, simultaneously bolstering the local economy in the affected areas.

In 2023, we directly benefited 2,571 people by responding to three national emergencies: fires in La Libertad and Usulután, Tropical Storm Julia, and Tropical Storm Pilar, as well as the ongoing humanitarian crisis of Salvadoran immigrants  who have returned to the country. Over $125,000 worth of essential goods were distributed, including hygiene kits, clothing, footwear, mattresses, biosecurity items, and food.
